In a monumental coincidence, he did it in exactly the same number of career games, 1487, as Gretzky. After he scored, teammates mobbed the 39-year-old Russian to celebrate, as the crowd chanted “Ovi, Ovi, Ovi”. To honor the NHL’s new all-time goals leader, the NHL paused the game for an on-ice ceremony that lasted over ten minutes.
