The historic in-state rivalry between these two teams dates back over a century. At the beginning of this season, both teams ranked in the top-25 of the Associated Press preseason poll for the first time since 1995. It was also the Hokies first appearance in the preseason poll in eight years, matching their best preseason ranking in program history.
